The Lore of Satha

Gilda.jpg

Terrain

Satha is what's considered a medium-sized island on Gilda. It experiences all four seasons to varying degrees, and is host to four significant terrains:

  1. Heavily Wooded: To the north and north-west of Satha is an untouched forest. Before the elves arrived, the humans fabled that dark and mysterious creatures lived there once upon a time. Because of that, they left the forest completely alone. However, when the elves showed up, they bravely entered the thicket and found it to be perfectly to their taste.

  2. Rolling Plains: To the south-west and south, there are some lush plains of grass, flora, and sparse wooding. It's perfect to convert into farmland, and allows for ample viewing points all around. The humans feel the most safe here as they can work the land naturally and to their advantage.

    • 'Wyrdafel' is a portal to another world. This is only relevant for the old core members and does not effect anyone on Satha. Learn about it IC!

  3. Barren Wasteland: in the east, there is a wasteland which didn't always look so dead. In fact, it's only increased in its loss of flora in the last fifty years or so thanks to the orcish practice of working the land until it can't give anything more. They adapt perfectly fine on dry terrain, so this has come at no bother to them at all. Their huts are typically made of bone and leather, so they've little need to harvest massive amounts of wood.

    • The Daggerpeaks are three very difficult-to-climb mountains. They are jagged and treacherous. However, the orcs believe there are some very rare herbs which grow at the summit of the tallest mountain which mark the key ingredient for the revival ritual. This herb is known as 'Phoenix Thorn'.

  4. Swampy Marshlands: In the north-east is 'uncharted' territory. The marshlands are very undesirable to virtually every race. Save for a few special reagents one can gather, not many see worth in trekking into the unknown and potentially losing their lives. Also, it smells pretty awful and seems to be perpetually coated in a misty fog. Only the bravest dare to tread there.

Seasons & Holidays

Satha experiences all four seasons rather healthily. Each section of the island is hit by similar weather. That being said, it can primarily rain over Kelvae and not a drop of water will hit Tukah. (In the roleplay, this will be negotiated in ooc channels.)

Note: We will use normal English months and days of the week to not over-complicate things.

  • Winter: December, January, February.

    • Frequently snowy in the west primarily. If it does snow in the barrens, it can become a tundra instead if there is particularly heavy snowfall. The orcs don't like this, but they can adapt.

    • On the 25th of December, humans celebrate 'Winter's Forage' which is a time of year where homes are decorated in painted nut shells. Friends and family are given pretty packages filled with nuts. Richer citizens fill the nut shells with chocolate or coins. Elves and orcs are starting to catch on to this tradition. Some find it silly.

    • On the 14th of February, humans celebrate 'Lovers Day' which is a whole day where all obligations are dropped in order to celebrate unity with one's partner. If someone does not have a partner, they must walk out of town and collect leaves, flowers, and/or beautiful shells to wear on their heads, which they then must parade around town to try and attract someone's attention.

  • Spring: March, April, May.

    • Expect a lot of light showers. The barrens can see some soil rejuvenation during these months, which is fantastically spiritual for them as they are all about rebirth. Elves are particularly happy during this time, too, for obvious reasons.

    • On the 3rd of April, humans gather for an annual horse race called the 'Brilliant Rush'. All contestants must race around the lake which surrounds the mage college. The winner will be awarded a very rare and precious steed.

  • Summer: June, July, August.

    • The west is significantly cooler than the east thanks to the shade of their flora. However, the east experiences a lot more heat due to the bare soil and rock.

    • On the 24th of June, humans celebrate 'Might of the Great Burning' which commemorates the massive fire which almost destroyed Satha 500 years ago. Here, contestants will show their melee, archery, and magic prowess to win fame, cash, and other prizes.

  • Autumn: September, October, November.

    • Temperatures are cooling down all around. There are more island-wide storms and high winds. Anyone living downwind of the swamp is in for a smelly treat.

    • On the 31st of October, the humans celebrate 'The Grand Harvest', in which everyone scrambles to prepare for winter when the crops will be frozen over. A massive faire for buying and selling goods is placed behind Veldir for all to enjoy.

      • Some brave people attempt to join in a competition where they try to stay in the swamp the longest. The prize is a very hefty sum of money.

Animals of Satha

Here are the main animals which inhabit Satha. Due to Gilda being a voyager world, it is possible for foreign animals to be brought over and discovered. These are the beasts which you can find depending on the zone you're in. (Note: I won't list all fish and birds, just assume that when you're in the barrens, you won't see a robin for instance. Or, if you're in the forest, there won't be vultures.)

Currency

Money is very crucial in human culture. It is required not only to purchase things, but also show status.

  • Orcs are not believers in carrying coins. Instead, it's all about how useful you are to the tribe. The more an orc contributes to Tukah, the better their hut will be.

  • Elves also do not carry coin with them. They believe in being entirely self sufficient. Like the orcs, they are traders. Most elves sleep in community rooms with up to twenty other elves. They will acquire resources over time in order to build their own treehouses eventually.

    • That being said, both orcs and elves will partake in the obtaining of coins if it's to buy things in human lands.

10 Copper Coins = 1 Silver Coin

100 Silver Coins = 1 Gold Coin

Estimation Chart:

1 copper coin will buy you a tiny sweet.

5 copper coins will buy you a loaf of bread.

1 silver coin will buy you a hunk of meat.

5 silver coins will buy you a new outfit

50 silver coins will buy you good-condition gear

1 gold coin will buy you a standard horse.

gold coins will allow you to rent a one-room hut in Veldir.

20 gold coins can buy you a cottage in Veldir.

50 gold coins allows you to buy a large home in Veldir.

100 gold coins will give you enough materials to build your own ranch or farm outside of Veldir.

Language

Each race has a language of their own. However, orcs and elves are forced to learn human common in order to communicate with the main race on Satha. It is entirely possble to learn elvish and orcish, but it may pose as a bit of a challenge considering the inflections of the tongues.

Human Language: Drathish (resembles English / accents vary between islands. Satha sounds British.)

Elven Language: Lenian (resembles Lithuanian)

Orcish Language: Barjath (resembles Afrikaans)
