Ghosts

Appearance

  • They look precisely as any human would.

    • They are NOT partially see-through, though they can choose to be.

  • How they appear entirely depends on what they feel was the state in their life where they most accepted themselves.

    • So, if your character died at the age of 90 of old age, they could come back as a beautiful 20 year old in perfect health.

    • Or, if your character had a deformity or injury that permanently altered their appearance and they grew to love themselves regardless, they could come back as a ghost with the same alteration (for example, a scar or a missing limb.)

  • A ghost can change their clothes on a whim so long as they wore or at least saw the outfit when they were alive. They must have a strong memory or attachment to the outfit.

    • For instance, if your character had a favourite shirt, or a pair of shoes they loved.

    • Or, if they dreamed about wearing a certain dress, but could never get their hands on it.

    • OR, if they remember their mother wearing a pair of earrings they adored, it could appear.

Origins

  • The ghosts have quite a solemn story. They appeared during the same time as the werewolves, which was a very, very long time ago. Being that the werewolves were a race which appeared before the time of modern civilization, their history can be found woven through all cultures through and through.

  • The Fae, the wildlings of the forest, created the werewolves to protect nature from the likes of demons. Due to the wolves' constant fighting, they lost many comrades.

  • Werewolves form very close bonds with their packs. The losses were grievous, and caused many of the packs to turn far too feral for the Fae to control. When they were removed from the forests, they began turning on the human settlements which were starting to form.

  • Even after being given human forms by the Lady of Dreams, of whom lived on the moon, the werewolves still felt the great heartbreak of so many of their fellows being felled. They believed that since the Lady of Dreams (Lucidorella) was able to perform such immense magic for them on the Full Moon, that they could howl to her each time that bright sphere rose and ask for their lost loved ones to be returned.

  • Hearing about the wolves' plan to resurrect their dead, a war broke out between wolf, human, and demon. Many died in what was called the War Under the Moon. Demons were returned to hell, leaving humans and wolves to stare down at the corpses of their loved ones. When the New Moon rose, the werewolves tilted back their heads and howled in anguish.

  • As the bellowing sounds of the bestial cacophony reached the stars, a brilliant, twinkling mist surrounded the corpses on the battlefield. One by one, ethereal spirits stood up from their felled bodies and presented themselves.

    • Lucidorella watched from her prison on the moon. She had woven her powers of the dream to create an illusion of life once more.

  • From then onward, it became known to not only wolf-kind, but humans alike, that to die on a new moon would rebirth the soul in a limbo between existence and termination.

History

  • The ghosts were received both in acceptance and reluctance. Not everyone was happy to see someone back from the dead.

  • In the early days, many cultures allowed ghosts to remain working side by side. Others tried to banish them in fear.

  • It was found out that not all people could see ghosts, either. Only the more superstitious could. As the supernaturals started to recede into hiding thanks to the emergence of monster hunters and fearful normie governments, people stopped believing in ghosts.

  • Their existence was only kept alive by fairy-tales and freak accidents.

  • Since most supernaturals could very frequently see ghosts, witches and figures of religion would dedicate themselves to relocating ghosts from normie abodes by means of wards and prayer. Since the soul was dead, they were unholy and therefor effected by the same methods of banishing demons, vampires, and the undead.

Modern Day

  • Ghosts have learned to keep their heads down since the olden days. They don't frequently show themselves to normies, for fear of being banished by the Hidden Vatican, which is the governing force against the undead.

  • In August of the year 2019, a ghost named Derulisa tried to expose the supernatural to the world out of frustration of having to remain hidden. Unfortunately, whilst she was close to succeeding, she ended up being banished. Her virtuous heart carried her to Azatheer.

Noteworthy People

  • Derulisa Johnston: The ghost lover of Justin Marin. She aided the process of trying to combine the supernatural and normie worlds. She didn't succeed, but she did get very close. Her name is known among supernatural and ghost communities as a revolutionary and rebel.

Advanced Lore

  • Not all people come back from the dead on a new moon. Only people that had unfinished business return.

    • Once that unfinished business is completed, they will either go to Azatheer or Drothoth (heaven or hell).

  • Ghosts are extremely cold to touch.

    • If a ghost is very old, or formerly a wizard, they have even been known to weave basic frost magic.

  • People can only see ghosts if they believe in them wholeheartedly. This means that a lot of the supernatural community can see them on a day to day basis.

    • Someone who is doubtful of their existence (because they believe they might be crazy) might struggle to frequently see them.

  • Ghosts can feel all of their emotions still.

  • They cannot eat, but they can smell pungent smells.

  • Ghosts can levitate two feet off the ground, but they cannot fly.

  • To extract a ghost's essence, one would need to cut a ghost with a holy blade. This will in turn cause them to bleed ectoplasm.

    • Ghosts can also cry ectoplasm.

  • Ghosts can pick up objects with a willpower check. (Ask a DM).

    • Similarly, people can touch them only if the ghost passes a willpower check to become temporarily solid for them.
